Golden Mile

many a year has passed

since I walked that golden mile

but bright lights were a flickering

and besides I needed the smile

must remember to pack my woolies

as it can chill the bones alright

down at the northern pier

that wind can gather some might

I decided for my journey

I'd hop onto a tram

remembering how my poor feet blistered

I know I'm such a ham

but when those bright lights beamed

illuminations galore

my smiles went out in streams

and I wanted more and more

I stayed beyond the midnight close

before I climbed the tower

had a dance on the ballroom floor

wurlitzered round the hour

safely tucked into my B & B

my energies are dead

until my full English breakfast

with marmalade and spread ;)

  12. really nice. Love the little asides your put in here. The being a ham and the final parenthetical, really strong…really must be in a parenthetical mood tonight, as I find myself drawn to them in the various poems I read tonight…quite good, bringing the reader in closer, on a personal, conversational level….really strong. Great illustration of the evening. Thanks

  15. On my "grand tour" of the UK, I was warned not to go "on my own" to Blackpool or Liverpool (where I thought I should perambulate); but I took folks advice. I doubt those cities are any "dodgier" than others. I found nothing but kindness and graciousness everywhere I traveled. I had an odd landlady in York, and several in the far West of Ireland but I suppose one expects oddness and cool suspicion of Americans in some places. Loved the poem. I like the warm feel of your being tucked in on your trip. Charming poem.

    1. sadly Gay think you were as well, particularly being on your own but the people of Liverpool are very friendly and warm hearted on the whole and only too willing to help. Known for their quirky sense of humor :)But you chose wonderful places to visit I love York and the shambles but not been to Ireland, lots of lovely places there. - xxxxxxx much love and hugs Lib

  17. There was a lot in this that reminded me of San Francisco' Pier 39 where there's much to do and definitely cold. (An aside, Google is making it so hard. I'm on my 4th attempt)
