Canary's Song

the clock silently ticks
at seventeen
everything was so simplistic
so much promise
of fast cars in polished red and diamonds
entering the springboard of life's thread
ever thrilled at the yellow canarys song
never counted
on those squishy 'fat toads'
that snarled onto dreams
almost sightless
those skips became plods
through clogged up mud
as life metered out more than it should

  1. toads will do that...
and life will bog us down if we let it...i think it easier at the younger age as we dont carry much in the way of responsibility or at least pretend like we dont you know....there is still fun to be had though...

  2. I always enjoy these views into others' adolescent experiences. My life was so different as by 17 I was working full time to support my Dad and younger brother. Wonderful in its descriptions, it captured my imagination.

  3. Ah, those were the days...I think we should all have a Poetopia piggy bank, save a date, and gather in a huge poetic expression of complete immaturity...can you imagine! Love the imagery laced throughout...but can't quite shake the picture of the fat toad going splat ;)

  4. At 17, life looks rosy and promising, until we encounter those that love to snarl our dreams into mud ~ And I also like your picture ~

  8. yep, curveballs do come our way, where the unexpected is but a day away, or something like that, some expression I heard once. Love how you phrased it with toads and the transformation from skipping to plodding through mud. Excellent read. Thanks

  10. On the 5th of October, my Mum, Libithina passed away suddenly at home. She gained so much satisfaction from the work she did and the friendships she cultivated. It is devastating she is no longer here.

  11. DrJay, so sorry to hear of her loss. She was a beautiful member of our poetry communities. And how significant this post...somehow the canary's song seems especially appropriate. Bless you all. Victoria
